Why
In 2013, music streaming was still finding its place on phones: Spotify’s free mobile experience arrived that year. In my circle, VK was already the music library. Your songs lived on your profile, alongside your friends and their collections.
That made listening together surprisingly awkward. Everyone had music, but whose library got to take over the speakers?
VK already had everything needed to answer that question: the friendships and the songs. I built Music Mixer to find the overlap. Pick the friend you’re with, and play something you both like, without assembling another playlist by hand.
How
Sign in with VK, choose a friend, and mix your audio libraries using one of three rules:
- Same songs: play tracks that appear in both libraries, matched by artist and title.
- Same artists: if you have a song by an artist, include that artist’s songs from your friend’s library too. Familiar taste, with room to discover something new.
- No filter: trust your friend’s taste and play their whole collection.
The player makes the overlap visible: a friend might have 232 songs, with 47 in common. You can also listen to your own library.
Music Mixer was free on Google Play, with ads, from September 2013 until July 2018, and reached more than 700,000 downloads. Its appeal came from a small addition to something people already used every day: turning two personal music collections into one shared listening session.
