Why

A group trip can end with an accounting problem: one person paid for dinner, another booked the stay, and only some people joined the last activity. Everyone remembers paying for something. Working out the final balances takes longer than anyone wants.

For Splitter in 2026, I kept the requirement small: open a link, add people and expenses, and see who should pay whom. No account creation or app installation before a group can start using it.

The useful result is a shared answer everyone can check. Receipts give the numbers context, and a final snapshot lets the group agree on the settlement without the figures changing afterward.

How

  1. Create a group for a trip, dinner or household, and add the people sharing costs.
  2. Record each expense: who paid, how much, and exactly which people should share it. An expense can apply to the whole group or just a subset.
  3. Review the settlement: Splitter nets each person’s spending against their share and produces a short list of payments.

You can attach receipt photos and let AI extract the total. Share the group with a link so others can see the expenses, then seal it when the accounting is finished or share a read-only snapshot.

The settlement combines debts instead of asking everyone to reimburse every purchase separately. That keeps the last step of a trip manageable: check the numbers, make the payments, and get on with your day.

Splitter is free to use on the web, and its source is open on GitHub. It is a small tool with a deliberately short path from “who paid for this?” to a settled group.
